Kelah - Malaysian Mahseer

Malaysia has 449 species of freshwater fish(source: Jurnal Simfoni Alam). The most attractive and being a madness for the anglers is ikan Kelah ( Mahseer) or Tor Tambroides in its scientific brand. There are 19 species of Kelah over the world but only 3 species exist in Malaysia.

In Malaysia their name is given in accordance to local community. People in Peninsular name it as Kelah, Empurau or Semah in Sarawak and Pelian withinn Sabahan community.

Being called as a King of the River, kelah also being hunted because of  it taste and good demand in the ornamental fish industries. Its can reach 2 meter long in size and weight maximum 20kg.

Habitat and diet

Their habitat far into the forest and choose a clean river with highly oxygenated water  is causing this fish has a high value.

Neram

Basically its diet are jungle fruit(eg: neram, maris, ara, perah,mata, jambu air), insects(jungle cricket, cockroach) and crustaceans.

Kelah Fishing

Commonly the best way to hook a kelah is by using bottom technique fishing. Must remember to use small round sinker because kelah is hypersensitive to the sound. Any strange noise especially louder will make them run away. 

Prohibited Method

Using poison, bomb and electrical current is strictly prohibited. This method will lead to their extinction. If this happened then it is a disaster to our country and we ourselves!
